Course 9: AWS Media DevOps / Infrastructure-as-Code
Deploy and tear down a full AWS media pipeline — live or VOD — from version-controlled infrastructure code instead of manual console configuration, and design autoscaling for a live-event traffic spike. Capstone: a full reproducible pipeline deployed entirely from IaC.
Prerequisites
- Completion of Module 3 (Encoding & Delivery) and/or Module 4 (Live Webcast Engineering), or equivalent hands-on experience configuring AWS MediaConvert/MediaLive/MediaPackage through the console
- Basic command-line comfort; no prior IaC (CloudFormation/Terraform) experience assumed
Learning Outcomes
By the end, you can deploy and tear down a full AWS media pipeline (live or VOD) from version-controlled infrastructure code instead of manual console configuration, and design autoscaling for a live-event traffic spike.
Weekly Curriculum
Week 1IaC Fundamentals for Media
Clicking through the same MediaConvert setup for the fifth time is the tell that it should be code, not muscle memory.
CloudFormation vs Terraform tradeoffs. IAM and VPC design for media workloads. Lab: write a Terraform module that provisions an S3 + MediaConvert VOD pipeline, recreating Module 3's capstone from code.
Week 2Live Infrastructure as Code
A live channel you can destroy and recreate in ten minutes is a live channel you can actually test.
Provisioning MediaLive channels and MediaPackage endpoints from IaC. MediaTailor SSAI infrastructure as code. Lab: stand up a complete live channel from a single IaC template, verify playback.
Week 3Auto-Scaling & Reproducible Pipelines
Media workloads don't scale like typical web traffic — a viral moment doesn't look like a normal traffic spike.
EC2 autoscaling for live-event traffic spikes. Reproducible multi-environment (dev/stage/prod) pipelines. Lab: build an autoscaling group and a deploy flow for a simulated live event.
Week 4Capstone
The real test of infrastructure code isn't standing it up — it's tearing it down cleanly, every time.
Deploy a full reproducible pipeline — MediaLive, MediaPackage, MediaConvert and MediaTailor — entirely from infrastructure code, including autoscaling for the live path and a working teardown script.
Who It's For
Cloud/DevOps Engineers
Engineers who already know Terraform/CloudFormation generally and want the media-services-specific layer filled in.
Live Ops Teams
Teams responsible for live-event reliability who need infrastructure that can be tested and torn down safely, not console-configured and hoped-for.
Media Platform Architects
Engineers designing multi-environment (dev/stage/prod) media pipelines who need reproducibility, not tribal knowledge.
