Course 8: Player Performance & QoE Engineering
Systematically diagnose and fix the four things that actually hurt player QoE in production — slow startup, excessive rebuffering, memory leaks, and cross-browser inconsistency. Capstone: audit-and-fix a provided player build, deliver a QoE dashboard.
Prerequisites
- Completion of Module 1 (Video Player Engineering) or equivalent hands-on experience with a production HLS/DASH player
- Comfortable with browser devtools (Network, Performance, Memory panels)
Learning Outcomes
By the end, you can systematically diagnose and fix slow startup, excessive rebuffering, memory leaks and cross-browser/device inconsistency — and instrument a dashboard that catches regressions before users complain.
Weekly Curriculum
Week 1Startup Time & ABR Diagnosis
"It feels slow" is not a diagnosis — this week turns that into a millisecond-by-millisecond breakdown.
Time-to-first-frame (TTFF) breakdown: where the milliseconds actually go. ABR and bandwidth-estimator tuning. Rebuffer-ratio root-cause analysis: network-caused stalls vs buffer-management bugs. Lab: audit an existing player's TTFF and rebuffer metrics using real network traces, propose concrete fixes.
Week 2Memory, Cross-Browser & Dashboarding, Capstone
The player that never crashes in your testing is quietly leaking memory on every user's third session.
Memory leak profiling: heap snapshots, common MSE leak patterns. Cross-browser/device quirks: Safari EME behavior, low-end Android decode limits. Building a QoE dashboard from the metrics that matter. Capstone: audit-and-fix a deliberately-flawed player build, deliver a working QoE dashboard plus a written report.
